A nurse by profession, Susan’s 47-year career began as a primary care nurse in one of New York City’s premiere teaching facilities, Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. There she spent seven years on the Pulmonary care unit where she had the direct responsibility of caring for critically ill patients. As a result of her undivided caring for her patients and her in depth knowledge of pulmonary medicine, Susan was chosen to be a member on one of the first medical teams in America to successfully conduct a lung transplant.
After raising her four children in Ridgefield, CT, Susan returned to nursing at the Laurel Ridge Health Care Center in Ridgefield, CT where she had the overall responsibility of caring for thirty-four long term care and rehabilitation patients. It was here that Susan expanded her knowledge of nursing in the fields of patient medication administration, wound care, MDS assessments, Foley catheterization, nebulizer, 02 therapy, CPR, infection control and hospice care. Susan was a member of the Corporate Safety Committee.
In 2008, Susan and her family relocated to Tucson, AZ where she split her time between working at Life Care Center of Tucson, a skilled nursing facility, and launching Southwest Beverages® with her husband, Bob, a 35-year beverage executive. It was with Southwest Beverages® that Susan began her business career as Director of Customer Relations and Service. Susan quickly gained experience in product design, pricing, packaging, and business administration to the point where, with her husband, she became Co-Founder of HJS Clothing®. Drawing upon her nursing experience, the first product Susan created was an incredibly attractive black V-neck T-Shirt reading, “I Love Being a Nurse®”, which she targeted as a gift for nurses on Nurses Day and continues to do so. While it was her intention to launch a range of high-quality woman and men’s clothing apparel under her brand, HJS Clothing®, the events of the Covid-19 pandemic had such a dramatic effect on Susan that she created a range of frontline first responder T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies and began to market them. Susan feels so passionate about honoring and helping the frontline first responders, that she will donate 25% of the profit from all T-Shirts, Hoodies and Zip-up’s that bear the phrase, “I Support Frontline First Responders Covid-19 War Heroes®” to family members of First Responders who have passed away from Covid-19.
Susan is member of Harper Jenkins Scobie Enterprises, a management and holding company for each of its subsidiaries, HJS Clothing®, Southwest Beverages®, and Stuff For Everyone®. Susan lives with her husband, Bob, in Oro Valley, AZ.
